Membership

The Ruby offers two tiers of membership: FULL and COMMUNITY memberships, paid either monthly or annually. For monthly memberships, a minimum commitment of 6 months is required. **Please note: for both memberships, there is a one-time registration fee of $75, and a monthly commitment to helping. The Ruby is a community-run work and event space. As part of your Ruby membership, and in order to better know your fellow Rubies, you must also commit to staffing 2 hours at the front desk or helping with 1 event per month.

Scholarships & Fellowships

For each of the above memberships, Scholarship rates are available to government employees, teachers, students, veterans, and single moms. (We especially encourage minority-identifying persons — non-cis, non-binary, queer, of color — with financial need to apply.) The scholarship community membership is $50 per month; the scholarship full membership is $125 per month. The one-time registration fee is reduced to $25 and the monthly commitment of 2 hours or 1 event per month still applies. To apply, please fill out the appropriate membership form above, and specify your interest in a scholarship rate.

Thanks to our lifetime Rubies, we are also offering three Fellowships for those with financial need:

The Dr. Carolyn M. Kaelin Fellowship will be given to a writer or artist of color with financial need. This is a full, one-year membership to The Ruby. Please email staff@therubysf.com to inquire about The Dr. Carolyn M. Kaelin Fellowship.

The Dorothea Gertrude Flynn Fellowship will be given to a recipient who was the first in their family to enroll in higher education. This is a full, one-year membership to The Ruby. Dorothea Gertrude Flynn was born in 1917. She had planned to attend Barnard College (Columbia did not accept women at the time) and dreamed of a becoming a writer—specifically, a journalist. After her mother died in childbirth and her father subsequently lost everything in the Depression, she was no longer able to afford college, and never attended. She was always a passionate advocate for education for women, and would have been thrilled by the community of writers and creatives here at the Ruby. Please email staff@therubysf.com to inquire about The Dorothea Gertrude Flynn Fellowship.

The Leonore Peyser Davis Writing Fellowship will be given to a young writer and/or poet to attend our weekend writers retreat in fall 2019. Please email staff@therubysf.com to inquire about The Leonore Peyser Davis Writing Fellowship.

The Leonore Peyser Davis Music Fellowship will be given to a young musician to attend our weekend music workshop (date TBD). Please email staff@therubysf.com to inquire about The Leonore Peyser Davis Music Fellowship.

Lifetime

We also offer LIFETIME memberships. The Ruby is entirely member funded and takes no outside investments; lifetime memberships help support our commitment to scholarship rates and keeping the arts in San Francisco. Email staff@therubysf.com to inquire about lifetime memberships (in addition to a lifetime of full membership, these include a scholarship in your name).

The Ruby is a space for women and non-binary individuals to enjoy the camaraderie and congeniality of one another. We reserve the right to only accept applicants who we believe will contribute to, and not take away from, the private and intimate atmosphere of the club and workspace. Club, event, and work facilities are maintained for members' use only.
